Recreation

Recreation is one of Sport New Zealand’s five key priorities under the Sport NZ Strategic Plan 2009-2015.

Outdoor safety for operators

SupportAdventure is a central, credible source of safety guidance for those who deliver adventure and outdoor activities. It's particularly focussed on requirements during the business start-up phase, and in ongoing reviews of safety management systems.

Updates (February 2013)

A reminder that applications to the Active Recreation contestable fund close 4pm Monday 25 February 2013 - copies of the EOI are available here (DOC, 121 Kb).

New regulations: Adventure activity regulations

The new regs require some adventure activity operators to be safety audited and registered. Read more.

New: Outdoor Recreation Research Agenda

The agenda aims to help all parters work together on strategic research topics and issues.

The plan says:

"We want a healthy, sustainable and co-ordinated recreation sector delivering quality opportunities that get more New Zealanders participating."

Recreation includes a range of leisure, cultural or sporting activities, undertaken in natural, heritage, rural and urban open space and outdoors.

It offers New Zealanders opportunities for improved mental and physical wellbeing, education gains, social development, economic prospects (employment, business investment, marketing opportunities), building national identity and understanding our environment.

Strategic direction

Sport NZ is guided by the Outdoor Recreation Strategy 2009-2015. The strategy recognises the contribution that outdoor recreation makes to the nation’s health and wellbeing, and social, education, conservation, cultural, environment and economic outcomes, especially when large numbers of people participate in the many and varied activities available across the full spectrum of outdoor recreation settings.
