Making clear the board's intent

11 May 2016

The key instruments of board oversight - purpose, policy and planning.

The idea of working to outcomes and within a policy framework remains misunderstood by some.

Boards meet every 4 – 6 weeks but have constant accountability. These are the tools by which directors can have confidence in between meetings that management are clear about what to achieve and limits placed on decision making.

These understandings are increasingly important as obligations on directors under new legislation gradually increase.

Working with your board

16 June 2016

Achieve the board’s outcomes, stick within policy.

Chief Executives need clarity from their boards and then need to use the time of directors to best effect.

Without those things the potential around the table is often wasted and management are left unclear about direction and discretion

This course will cover:

  • What your board must give you – clear outcomes, policies and delegations, performance framework
  • Working with the board – Sound meetings, good papers and decision processes
  • The soft stuff – working with the chair, involving senior staff, directors as volunteers
