Eligible districts

The Trust's area is the designated Southland province including Queenstown, Glenorchy, Arrowtown, Tapanui and Heriot areas.

Projects outside of this area will not be considered unless there is a clear, demonstrated community benefit to the people of Southland.


Non-profit organisations that are a legal entity and operating in our area can apply including;
• an incorporated society or an incorporated charitable trust (check your registration at incorporated at Societies & Trusts
• a company with charitable purposes that is registered with Charities Services
• entities established under the Local Government Act 2002, Maori Trust Boards Act 1955 or Education Act 1989

Established in 1988 to formalise the community ownership of shares in Trust Bank Southland on behalf of the people of Southland; later became a substantial owner of shares in Trust Bank NZ;1996 shares sold to WBC; Trust investment now $190m.


To receive interest and dividends from investments for the Southland community & distribute income to charitable & non-profit organisations within the Community Trust of Southland's area of operation

• health, wellbeing and active lifestyles

Excluded projects

No funding for individuals, commercial organisations, retrospective projects.

How to apply

Please note there will not be a major grants round in 2020.

EOIs are made online. If you haven’t applied to us before you need to register by providing your name, organisation and email address as well as creating a password – it only takes a moment.

Information required with your application

Latest audited financial statements, constitution, trust deed or rules, tax exempt letter from IRD.

The Community Trust of Southland Trustees.

Decision time

Decisions on Expressions of Interest for 2019 are made in May 2019 and generally decisions are one of the following:
• Invited to submit a full application
• Declined
• Invited to submit an application through general grants (i.e. $100,00 & Under)

How notified

A letter sent within a week of decision to grant funding.

How paid

By direct credit.

Conditions of acceptance

All grant recipients must complete an accountability form. Random detailed audits occur annually.

If there are any conditions, they are outlined in the acceptance letter.
