Eligible districts



This grant is for museums that rely solely or in part on volunteers to operate.

National Services Te Paerangi works with museums, art galleries, whare taonga, tribal museums, cultural centres, historic places, and science, interpretive, or exhibition centres. If you are involved in collection care, public programmes (including exhibitions), education, or community relationships, this grant may help you.

• Must be a legally constituted non-profit organisation
• An incorporated society or charitable trust.

The Helping Hands Grant is a new grant from National Services Te Paerangi that aims to help small museums carry out their responsibilities.

July 2020: Please note as part of our response to COVID-19 National Services Te Paerangi has increased the maximum funding for the Helping Hands Grant to $2,000 including GST. until 31 December 2020. In addition NSTP has also relaxed the criteria for the Helping Hands Grant to include operational or ongoing costs. This will mean you can apply to cover a bill payment, rent, or leases. Both changes will be in place until 31 December 2020. 


To support projects, information, services, or materials that will help carry out these responsbilities.

Projects funded

• Arts & Culture
• Conservation
• Historical & Cultural heritage

Activities funded

• conservation materials (eg, gloves, acid-free boxes)
• equipment or capital items (dehumidifiers, photocopiers, computers, etc) 
• professional advice on a range of museum matters (eg, exhibition design, interpretation, conservation advice), but cannot be used to pay salaries
• solutions to address issues raised when undertaking the New Zealand Museums Standards Scheme (eg, collection care improvements)
• the services of tradespeople (eg, lighting experts, plumbers, builders)
• rental agreements (eg, for dehumidifiers, monitors)
• the development of marketing materials (eg, for brochures)
• pest extermination or fumigation
• construction materials (eg, paint, wood, tools)
• office equipment repairs..

Excluded activities

• national and international travel for professional development (see our Travel Subsidy Grant and Professional Development Grant instead)
• salaried staff
• items that have already been purchased
• items for projects that have already been completed
• items for projects that do not adhere to current museum best practice
• ongoing operational costs (wages, rent, bills, etc).

How to apply

Apply by 30 April if you wish to receive a grant in the same financial year (1 July – 30 June).

An organisation can make only one application per financial year.

Information required with your application

• Organisation details
• Most recent annual accounts
• Evidence of legal status (e.g. letter of incorporation or charitable trust status)
• Inland Revenue 'tax exempt' status confirmation letter (if applicable)
• Quotes (if applicable)
• Any other supportive documentation.

Decision time

We will contact you with the outcome of your application within 15 working days of receipt. All decisions made by our assessment panel are final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

Payment is made upon the provision of a receipt or a formal quote (confirmed later with a receipt).
