Eligible districts



• open to rural sports clubs and rural school teams with young people aged between 5-19 years who require subsidies to assist with transport expenses to local sporting competitions (this excludes travel to regional or national events).
• all applications must come from sport club teams and school based teams.
• applications will be for travel expenses that will be incurred for the period 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2019.

Sport New Zealand (Sport NZ) is the new name for the government organisation responsible for sport and recreation (formerly SPARC).


To help subsidise travel for junior teams participating in local sport competition.

How to apply

Applications for 2020 have now closed.  Applications for funding for travel expenses that will be incurred for the period 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2021 will be open in October 2020.​

Conditions of acceptance

Recipients of grants from the Rural Travel Fund will be required to complete and return an accountability form together with invoices for the grant expenditure no later than 30 June 2017.

Other information

Please note: If applicant organisations whom have received assistance do not return their accountability forms, it can jeopardise any future funding. Applicants must be able to account for the total amount allocated.
