Eligible districts



The Max e Grants program provides grants to:
• community groups
• schools
• kindergartens
• day care centres

Who apply on behalf of a disadvantaged child or young person (or group of children for a single project - eg. school excursion) to further their education prospects.

Generally, organisations applying for a Barnardos Office Max e Grant will be expected to be not-for-profit community group.

Individuals can not apply. They must apply through the auspice of a group in one of the above categories.

Max e Grants has been successfully operating in Australia for over four years and has given out AUD$600,000 in grants to over 1000 Australian children. From 2011, OfficeMax New Zealand joins this program to launch the same initiative for children in New Zealand.


Max e Grants is a small grants program that enables education providers to nominate children for assistance. Sometimes it just takes something small to help them on their way, for instance assistance with school books and stationery, uniforms and equipment, special tuition or support with excursions.

Projects that assist children by supporting their learning.

Excluded projects

• general fundraising project or appeals
• any retrospective funding
• other foundations, trusts and philanthropic organisations
• children of employees of OfficeMax®, Barnardos Australia or the applying organisation

Activities funded

Assistance may be given by way of financial support for:
• uniforms
• school supplies/equipment
• school books/texts
• sporting equipment/uniforms
• tutoring
• tutoring external/tutoring in class
• school Fees
• excursions
• extracurricular activities (such as club fees, uniforms etc)

This is not a definite list and other needs may be considered on a case by case basis so long as they are linked to educational participation.

Excluded activities

The following applications or uses of funds are not permitted under any circumstances: 
• general fundraising project or appeals
• other foundations, trusts, charities and philanthropic organisations
• the school applying must be involved in delivering the programme. A school can represent a partnership with other schools or community organisations. The school applying is responsible for the acquittal on behalf of the partnership.
• applications are not accepted for retrospective funding activities: i.e. projects that are already underway or which will commence prior to the project start date advertised for the round
• applications will not be accepted from parents, in home educator providers or from students or families who are participating in home schooling programmes
• no applications for overseas travel for excursions, tours or school exchange programmes will be considered.

The Max e-Grants round has closed. Successful applicants will receive payment by 6th July 2020.

Applications and Awards of Grants:
• no applications by mail will be accepted. All applications must be via the official website application form.
• all applications must meet the outlined funding criteria.
• closing dates for applications are listed on the site and may change from time to time without notice.
• incomplete or late applications cannot be accepted.
• all successful Applicants will be required to complete and agree to a Grant Agreement form online before the grant will be paid directly into the successful school's bank account in one (1) single payment. No other bank details will be accepted. 
• by providing support material to Barnardos as part of an acquittal you warrant that you have obtained the permission and consent of the owners or any person depicted in an image to provide the support material to Barnardos and for the support material to be reproduced by Barnardos or Office Max or its suppliers at their absolute discretion and agree to indemnify Barnardos or OfficeMax or its suppliers against any claim, action or loss by the owner or any person depicted in an image in relation to the use or reproduction of the support material.
• the decision of the Barnardos OfficeMax Max e Grants Programme on all applications is final. No reasons for decisions will be given, nor will any correspondence on decisions be entered into.
• unsuccessful applications will NOT be automatically considered in a subsequent grant round. You must re-apply for consideration of another grant.
• all applicants will be notified by email of the result of their application.

How notified

Applicants will be notified by email of the result of their application.

How paid

All successful applicants will be required to sign a grant agreement before any part of the grant payment is made. Grants will be paid by direct deposit in to a nominated bank account of the organisation.

Conditions of acceptance

All grant recipients are required to provide a feedback report as to how the grant was utilised within five months of receiving the funds. This is just one of several term and conditions, go to the website link provided below for further information.

All funds awarded to successful Applicants must be spent on the agreed project, event or activity. Any requests for changes in the nature of the project, event or activity or completion dates, etc must be made to Barnardos Australia.
All grant recipients are required to complete a grant acquittal report as to how the grant was utilised within three months of the completion date for the project provided on the application form.
Any unspent funds are to be returned to Barnardos Australia at the same time (or earlier if known) and accounted for in accordance with the statement of expenditure contained in the grant acquittal report.

Whilst we would like to be able to assist all disadvantaged children with their educational pursuits, we have a limited pool of funds available and as such need to apply the following limitations and terms and conditions.

Each applicant organisation is required to limit their applications to one per application period.

Should an organisation be successful in their application, on behalf of a child or group of children for one item/activity, they cannot apply for the following application period.

No applications will be considered for an organisation with outstanding acquittals for grants from previous periods.
