Eligible districts



Applications for the rural travel fund are open to rural sports clubs and rural school teams with young people aged between 5 and 19 years who require subsides to assist with transport expenses to local sporting competitions.

The following criteria shall be applied when considering applications for funding.
School club teams and sport club teams are defined as:
• a school club team participating in local sport competition in weekends, that excludes inter school and intra school competitions played during school time
• a sports club team participating in organised sport competition through club membership outside of school time.

Sport New Zealand (Sport NZ) is the new name for the government organisation responsible for sport and recreation (formerly SPARC). The Rural Travel Fund has been developed to assist young people in rural communities to participate in sporting competitions.


The Travel Fund is designed to subsidize travel costs for junior teams with members between 5 and 19 years old to participate in local sporting competitions.

Information required with your application

Including the application, please attach:
• a balance sheet from your organisation (i.e. financial statement)
• a deposit slip (in case your application is approved)
• evidence of your endorsement from your local affiliated club/school (if required)

Conditions of acceptance

Sport NZ requires organisations that receive funding to return an accountability form to the territorial authority that distributed the funds showing proof of purchases made within that period and attach any receipts.

Please note: Failing to return the accountability form and an applicant may jeopardise any future funding from the Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund.

Other information

Sport NZ requires any unexpended funds as at 30 June each year be returned to the territorial authority for the reallocation of funding by the body in the following year.
