Variety Gold Heart Scholarship

History of award

Each year Variety helps around 20 talented Kiwi kids to reach their full potential and overcome personal challenges with a Variety Gold Heart Scholarship.


These young people, who already excel in the arts, sports or education, are awarded financial support of up to $5,000 and are matched with a mentor to help them achieve their life goals. This support is available for up to three years to help children who are physically or financially challenged fulfill their dreams. This could include assisting with tuition fees, personal development, coaching, and the purchase of training equipment, travel or accommodation.


Gold Heart Scholarship applications will be accepted for children up to the age of 18 and who are New Zealandresidents/citizens.

To a maximum of $5,000


Support is available for up to 3 years.

Closing dates

Make sure your application is submitted by 5pm on Tuesday 31 March 2020.

How do students apply?

The application form should be completed by the applicant and family and be read in conjunction with the criteria sheet.
Please include with your application:
* Letter from applicant stating in their own words what they would like to do with any funds that they receive and why
* Two written quotes (where possible) supporting amount requested
* Copy of child/young person's birth certificate (or returning resident's visa if born overseas)
* Relevant financial information (bank statements, pay slips or other supporting documentation)
Bank statements must show income and outgoings for the last two months.
* Two written references/supporting documents
* Any other relevant background or supporting information

Variety Scholarships are intended for those who do not have access to other sources of funding i.e. Tertiary scholarships, Child Cancer Foundation scholarships etc...

Decision makers

Variety Grants Committee


Your application will be considered by the Grants Review Panel in April 2020.
All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their applications in writing by the end of May 2020.

Conditions of acceptance

At the end of the scholarship period Variety will require a written report on the scholarship recipient's progress. Variety may, in its sole discretion, use any of the information relating to the successful applicant for the purpose of publicity.
