Peter Turner Scholarship in Documentary Photography

History of award

The Peter Turner scholarship has been established in memory of the late Peter Turner; esteemed author, editor, publisher, curator, and former teacher at the Wellington School of Design. Peter Turner came to New Zealand from London, England, with a long established international reputation for his renowned editorship of the British photography journal Creative Camera. While in New Zealand he championed photography as an art form and contributed to public knowledge and understanding of the medium through public lectures, and exhibitions of contemporary New Zealand photography. He is especially remembered for the friendship and support he offered many photographers and his special regard for practices he termed lyric, personal, or poetic documentary.
