Identifying and selecting talent are two very different things, according to several studies reported in Off the Bench; which focuses on how talent is found and nurtured. Allied to that is the Young People’s topic of growing participation in sport. Coaching is an important influence on both sports performance and participation; a new review in the Community Sport section provides greater insights into our coaching workforce (at all levels) and programmes to recruit, develop and retain.

Big Data is a buzz-phrase sweeping commerce. In the Organisational Capability section several articles look at the potential impact of big data on sports bodies and participation. In the Young People section, we look at creating positive youth sports experiences. Off the Bench includes a selection of annual reports from our sports and recreation sector.

With less than a fortnight to the July 23 opening ceremony of the 20th Commonwealth Games we carry reports in the Young People, Organisational Capability and High Performance sections relating to the legacy and participation, as well as event volunteering and sustainability. The NZOC’s website also provides New Zealand team updates (Useful Weblinks), while Off the Bench this month examines different approaches to athlete development.

We’ve got a little bit of football fever. From Brazil’s goals for hosting the World Cup (see High Performance) to articles on branding (Organisational Capability) and technology. We look too at FIFA’s joint initiative to ensure kids globally enjoy the game with fewer risks (Young People), as well as some UK case studies around kids’ participation (Useful Weblinks). Meanwhile, Places and Spaces centres on the debate around artificial turf.

Our Young People section contains New Zealand research providing the latest insight into participation in physical activity, as well as the provision of sport and recreation in the school setting. Sport NZ have also recently released a safe sport for children resource. The Community Sport and Recreation section highlights the Sport Recovery Programme in Christchurch, while Off the Bench and Useful Weblinks focuses on recently published resources for coaches.
