In this edition: Among major trends driving the future of sport is the influence of digital media. This is explored along with other topics in Off the Bench: Future of Sport. In the Organisational Capacity section, there’s new research on the behaviours, organisation and value of fans, and in High Performance section thinking on how cities decide whether and which mega-events to host. Young People has articles on strategies to encourage early sports activity, and Community, Sport and Recreation considers the role of informal sporting “communities” in maintaining adult engagement.

In this edition: Why do primary school age and adolescent girls drop out of sport and what’s likely to keep them engaged? Several of the reports in the Young People section deal with these issues. In Community Sport and Recreation, cycling initiatives are the focus. A range of sporting codes’ annual reports is the focus of the Off the Bench section.

The Sport New Zealand Group has published its new five year strategic plan with the aim of maintaining New Zealand’s sporting heritage. The announcement also includes a new Community Sports Strategy. Additionally, there is Sport NZ’s latest Active 2013-14 NZ Survey, which among other things reports on changes in participation in sport and active recreation among kiwi adults. Off the Bench takes a look at coaching.

We’ve waited a long time, but finally the Cricket World Cup and cricket fever is here. The Young People’s, and Community Sport and Recreation sections look at some developments in cricket participation across the Tasman; while the Sports Science and Organisational Capability sections look at injuries in the sport and the sponsorship of the CWC. Developing powerful branding is also a feature of the Organisational Capacity section. Off the Bench offers recent material on the development of active places and spaces.

In this edition: The Cricket World Cup, jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, kicks off in Christchurch this week – the first global sports competition here since the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The High Performance section is full of items on future global sporting events. In the Young People section, there’s studies of fitness in the context of managing ADHD, and the long term importance of motor skills. In Organisational Capability, workforce development is an area of focus. Off the Bench looks at Talent Identification and Development.
