The establishment of the Taumata Māori was in response to the independent Governance and Structural Review undertaken by Sport NZ Ihi Aotearoa and High Performance Sport NZ in 2021. • Q: What will the Taumata Māori focus on?

  • Q: Why is it necessary to have the Taumata Māori?

The implementation of Te Taumata Māori was a recommendation from the independent Governance and Organisational Structure Review undertaken in 2021 to ensure Sport NZ Ihi Aotearoa and High-Performance Sport NZ had a fit for purpose operating model.

The introduction of the Taumata Māori into the governance and leadership of Sport NZ Ihi Aotearoa and High-Performance Sport NZ and will help foster an authentic partnership with Māori, build trust with Māori partners and stakeholders and will address the systemic inequities and bias, to deliver Māori outcomes.

  • Q: What will the Taumata Māori be responsible for?

The Taumata Māori will provide leadership for both Sport NZ Ihi Aotearoa and High-Performance Sport NZ towards achieving their Te Tiriti o Waitangi commitments.

They will provide valuable guidance and influence on Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Ao Māori to improve Māori sport strategy and wellbeing outcomes.

The Taumata Māori will have decision making functions for Māori investment and will be involved in providing advice and support around strategy and investment across Sport NZ and High Performance Sport NZ.

They will be responsible for the monitoring and oversight of Sport NZ’s Te Pāke o Ihi Aotearoa (Māori Outcomes Framework) and Te Aho a Ihi Aotearoa, (Māori Activation Plan).
