Graduate Programme 2014 - 2015

I had always been interested in sport as a participant, volunteer, fan and coach. I studied at University of Auckland where I completed a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Commerce, before I moved to Wellington to start at Sport NZ.

My favourite projects to work on that had the most impact on my learning were the Community Sport Strategy and Investment Principles. After eight months in Wellington, I moved back to Auckland for my first placement at New Zealand Golf where I was able to experience a range of projects from volunteering at NZ Women’s Open and contributing towards research on how approaches to player development varies across the globe.

My next placement was with Aktive – Auckland Sport and Recreation where I was able to learn through working with a variety of sports and understand the different challenges each sport faces in a city that is changing, in population growth, diversity and leisure preferences.

My last placement was with Auckland Council where I really enjoyed interacting with local communities and learning about how the design of sport and recreation facilities and community spaces could encourage sustainability, participation or physical activity.

I’ll always remember my two years on the Programme with positive memories and appreciative of the people who made the experience unique. After the Graduate Programme, I started working for Auckland Council before taking a role at New Zealand Golf where I am currently, Participation and Insights Manager, contributing towards our goal of inspiring more people to play and grow a love for golf.

I would encourage all students in their last year of study to apply and get involved as you won’t regret it!
