Māui Hīanga: Te Hui Taonga Tākaro 2024 (National Tākaro Hui 2024)

September 11 - 12, 2024

Hoani Waititi Marae, Tāmaki Makaurau

Kaupapa: 'Ngā Tūmanako o Māui’

Recreation Aotearoa and Toi Tangata are bringing together practitioners, experts and pūkenga tākaro from across Aotearoa to explore the philosophies and practices of tākaro Māori.

This year's National Tākaro Hui will be hosted at Hoani Waititi Marae in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Who can attend?

Ko te reo rāhiri tēnei e rere atu ana ki ngā tai katoa, nau mai, tau mai, haere mai ki tēnei kaupapa whakahī!

All people who are involved in te whare tapere, ngā mahi a rēhia, tākaro, te ao haka, traditional Māori games, ngā taonga tākaro, play in Māori communities and hākinakina. Nau mai ngā ao tākaro katoa!

This hui is an opportunity to bring the different sectors together to reconnect, share and celebrate the revitalisation of tākaro Māori. Ko te mana motuhake o ā tātou taonga tuku iho te take.

There are THREE focus areas that weave 'Ngā Tūmanako o Māui' together:

  • Tuakana-Teina – A key focus of this hui is around tākaro succession and the development of rangatahi. The goal is to cultivate collaboration between tuakana and teina. We encourage all participants to bring at least one teina or like-minded individual to actively participate in this wānanga.
  • Whakakotahi – This hui provides an opportunity to reconnect and engage with fellow pūkenga tākaro and exponents from different sectors and areas of expertise.
  • Tuku Ihotanga – This hui aims to cultivate the development and growth of shared philosophies, encompassing the inherent attitudes and behaviours linked with taonga tākaro. Through ongoing discussions, we can shape the future direction for Tākaro Māori.
