Whaimutu Dewes, of Ngāti Porou and Ngāti Rangitihi descent, is deeply influenced by the teachings of his elders to fulfil the aspirations of te iwi Māori, for future generations.
He has a strong interest in economics and governance, particularly in the context of Māori economic development.
Whaimutu currently serves as the Chairman of Ngāti Porou Forests and Sealord Group. His extensive governance experience includes roles as Chair of Ngāti Porou Seafoods and Aotearoa Fisheries, and directorships at Contact Energy, Ngāti Porou Holding Company, Housing New Zealand, Television New Zealand, and the Advisory Board to the Treasury and AMP. Additionally, he has worked for the Departments of Justice and Māori Affairs, and in business development at Fletcher Challenge.
Whaimutu is a passionate advocate for the revitalisation of Te Reo Māori, and he and his wife Judy have raised their children to be fluent in Māori and English.
