Sport NZ and Isentia are into the fifth year of a major study of gender balance in sports news coverage and the journalists doing that reporting. This includes analysis of individual media companies, how gender balance differs by sport, team and event, and a detailed exploration of athlete portrayal.
The study involves human analysis of 40,000 media stories a year – around one-third of all sports news coverage in New Zealand. This includes online, print, television and radio sports news, but excludes community papers and match broadcasts. As a result, Sky Sport is not included in the study.
Each year we publish a main report, mid-year infographic and case studies of leagues, teams or major events. The project also involves ongoing engagement with media, sports and other stakeholders to explore opportunities to improve gender balance.
The study continues to evolve and improve, with new analysis added each year, and we welcome any suggestions on how the study could be enhanced or expanded.
