How will ageing sections of the population affect delivery and support?

What are we seeing?

  • New Zealand's population is ageing rapidly, with 17% over 65 and soon to outnumber those under 15. This trend is driven by declining birth rates and increased life expectancy.
  • The ageing population is causing higher demand for health services, resource allocation shifts, and economic challenges.
  • Significant disparities exist in life expectancy and health outcomes, particularly for Māori and Pacific communities.

What can we expect?

  • Structural population ageing in New Zealand will lead to more elderly than children, more deaths than births, and an end to natural population growth, with those over 65 projected to reach 25% of the population by the 2030s.
  • This demographic shift will significantly impact healthcare, workforce dynamics, economic growth, and resource allocation.
  • Regional disparities will emerge, with 45 out of 67 territorial authorities facing population declines by 2048, while Māori and Pacific populations under 15 will increase, leading to their greater prominence in society.

What might this mean for sport and recreation?

  • Government emphasis on physical activity for healthy ageing will increase, leading to age-inclusive practices and infrastructure adaptations, while the workforce will need better training to meet older adults' needs.
  • Demographic shifts will impact sport and recreation, with some areas facing viability challenges due to population decline, while a trend towards multigenerational participation for mixed abilities may emerge.
  • New markets catering to older adults will develop, including tailored products and services, virtual/augmented reality options, and community-based activities for social interaction.

What questions should we be asking ourselves today?

  • How can sport and recreation be more inclusive and accessible for older adults?
  • What strategies can we employ to address ageism and promote intergenerational participation in physical activities?
  • How can we innovate our offerings and leverage technology to cater to older participants' needs and ensure long-term viability?
