National guidelines for sport concussion

To assist concussion policy development in community sport

These guidelines have been produced by ACC in partnership with national sporting organisations to introduce a consistent standard for recognising and treating concussion in community sport.

The guidelines provide background information and a concussion awareness policy template to assist with:

  • increasing awareness of concussion in sport with the community and supporters
  • guiding principles and advice on concussion recognition and management
  • the process for a player returning to participate following a suspected concussion.

General principles of concussion management

  • Early removal and early access to care reduces recovery time.
  • Extra caution is required for child, adolescent and female athletes as they take longer to recover.
  • Everyone has a role to play in supporting the recognition and management of concussion.

Please note: these guidelines have been developed to ensure safety in community sport settings and separate advice applies for high performance sport.
