The new Sport Integrity Commission Te Kahu Raunui has launched
A new independent Crown entity has launched in Aotearoa New Zealand - the Sport Integrity Commission Te Kahu Raunui.
Te Kahu draws reference to the Māori kākahu, or cloak. Raunui symbolises the broad breadth and far-reaching responsibilities that the Commission aims to fulfil in safeguarding participants. This concept emerged through establishment work alongside the Māori advisory group, Te Ope Tāmiro.
The Commission’s purpose is to ensure sport and recreation in Aotearoa New Zealand is safe and fair. That means there are changes in the way integrity, safety and fairness issues are dealt with in New Zealand as follows:
- The former Sport and Recreation Complaints and Mediation Service (SRCMS) is now part of the Commission.
- Anti-doping services including testing and education and all the functions previously handled by Drug Free Sport NZ are now part of the Commission.
- Integrity guidance and education previously provided by Sport NZ via its Integrity Portal can now be found on the Commission website.
The Commission is here to help organisations in sport and recreation improve their awareness and understanding of integrity.
The Commission can also assist in the management and response to integrity issues. That may include and is not contained to: anti-doping, bullying and harassment, discrimination, child safeguarding and competition manipulation.
Sport and recreation organisations can and should continue to handle complaints they receive, but you can contact the Commission should you need further support.
Participants, athletes and those involved in delivering sport and recreation can go straight to the Commission.
You can visit the Commission’s new website at sportintegrity.nz or call 0800 378 437 for more information and resources. Please be sure to:
- Update your websites and member information. Replace information on the SRCMS and Drug Free Sport NZ with contact details for the Commission.
- Consider updating your policies and procedures. Anyone involved in sport and recreation - athletes, volunteers, officials, coaches and managers - can get help with integrity matters at any time by visiting sportintegrity.nz or calling 0800 378 437.
