Growing Coaches overview
Growing Coaches overview
Growing coaches is a leadership programme for secondary school students who want to coach sport at schools (secondary, primary, intermediate) or clubs.
Programme
The programme consists of:
- Eight hours of learning about coaching, including sport-specific and self-directed learning from a chosen sport, and
- Fifteen hours of coaching experience - coaching other young people.
The learning content can be taught at all levels in a secondary school. For those who use it for senior schools students, it has been aligned to physical education achievement standards. Secondary schools could have the expertise amongst teachers and sports coordinators to deliver the programme or may need assistance. Sport and recreation organisations can provide this assistance as they have the sport-specific knowledge.
Regional sports trusts (RSTs) can link schools to these organisations and clubs. They have Growing Coaches facilitators on their staff to help with programme delivery and teacher training.
