Outdoor Accessibility Design Guidelines

Outdoor Accessibility Design Guidelines

08 May 2025

Recreation Aotearoa and the Outdoors Accessibility Working Group have collaborated with industry and accessibility experts to develop guidelines aimed at improving access to outdoor recreation spaces across Aotearoa New Zealand.

In Aotearoa, we are fortunate to be surrounded by an outstanding natural environment. It is vital that everyone has the opportunity to access these outdoor spaces, regardless of their age, gender, sexuality, location, ethnicity or ability. This can foster a lifelong connection to te taiao (environment) and enhance overall quality of life.

Currently, significant barriers prevent disabled people from accessing outdoor recreation spaces and places of their choice, but demand for access is high.

These guidelines are intended for anyone involved in planning, developing, designing, managing or maintaining outdoor recreation spaces, as well as those advocating for accessibility in these areas.

The guidelines complement the Accessibility and inclusion in outdoor education and recreation guide, which is intended for outdoor providers and educators involved in delivering outdoor recreation programmes.
