Spotlight on deprivation

Four girls huddling

Using Active NZ survey data we do a deep dive into the impact of socioeconomic deprivation on participation in play, active recreation and sport.

This spotlight report focuses on understanding participation by New Zealanders from high deprivation geographic areas (deciles 8-10) compared with those from low deprivation areas (deciles 1-3).

One of the key findings is that New Zealanders from high deprivation areas are less likely to participate each week and in fewer sports and activities than those from low deprivation areas.

It complements the findings in the Active NZ survey 2018 that explores participation through the lenses of age, gender and ethnicity.
