We aim to ensure all New Zealanders have access to high-quality spaces for physical activity, helping to increase participation across the country. Our goal is for sport and recreation spaces and places to be fit-for-purpose, well-utilised, and environmentally and financially sustainable, while being adaptable to future needs. To achieve this, we support sport and recreation organisations nationwide in better planning and designing of sports and recreation spaces and places, creating healthier more active communities.
To guide smart decision-making and investment in play, active recreation and sport spaces and places, the framework includes a set of 10 interrelated principles and seven-step plan. For anyone planning or making decisions about spaces and places, using the framework will help ensure they will be well-used, sustainable, universally accessible and seen as good value investment.
Today sport and recreation clubs and organisations face increasing financial and regulatory pressure. This pressure, coupled with increased expectations from participants, aging club facilities and declining numbers of volunteers, requires us all to think innovatively about how some sport and recreation is delivered.
This guide has been developed to share learnings from previous hub projects across the country. Many of these projects have been collaborations between organisations and the communities they serve and, in many cases, they have resulted in sustainable, increased participation.
