Healthy Active Learning

Enhancing tamariki and rangatahi wellbeing

Healthy Active Learning is a joint government initiative between Sport NZ, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health and Health NZ – Te Whatu Ora, launched in 2019. It supports schools, kura and early learning services to improve the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi through healthy eating and drinking, and quality physical activity and curriculum delivery.

The initiative enables schools, kura and early learning services to create healthy and active learning environments, and better connection to their local communities.

A collaborative approach

Healthy Active Learning connects national, regional and local partners to support schools, kura and early learning services. Education settings are at the centre, with funding, resources and expertise tailored to local needs.

5 years of impact

Drawing on quantitative and qualitative evidence, the Healthy Active Learning 5 years of impact (2020 to 2025) report highlights what has been achieved, what has been learned, and the impact of creating education settings where ākonga and whānau experience belonging through quality food, drink and physical activity.

Honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi

Healthy Active Learning recognises Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to equitable wellbeing outcomes for all tamariki and rangatahi. This includes initiatives such as Mātaiao, the Kāhui Māori, and a mātauranga Māori outcome that guides the focus and delivery of Healthy Active Learning.

Mātaiao: connecting wellbeing, culture and te taiao

Mātaiao is the kaupapa Māori approach within Healthy Active Learning. It supports kura and kaiako to strengthen ākonga wellbeing through mātauranga Māori, connecting tamariki and rangatahi with te taiao, culture and physical activity.
