Media coverage of women’s sport

Sport NZ is proud to publish the 2025 Sports Media and Gender Report, which tracks gender balance in sports news coverage across Aotearoa.

Women’s sport made up 26% of sports news coverage in 2025, down slightly from 27% in 2024. Big events continue to uplift coverage, but the findings reinforce the need for sustained reporting of women’s sport, athletes and teams.

The first report was published in April 2021 and covers 14 months from July 2019 to December 2020 (excluding March to June 2020, where the study was paused due to COVID-19). Since then, annual reports, mid-year updates, and additional case studies are being published over the life of the study.
