Sport NZ welcomes Russia ban

06 December 2017

Sport New Zealand welcomes the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC’s) decision to ban the Russian Olympic Committee from sending a team to next year’s Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

“This is a good day for world sport and for all clean athletes,” says Sport New Zealand CEO Peter Miskimmin.

“We congratulate the IOC for taking this important step to hold Russia to account and keep the Pyeongchang games clean. This action also sends a reminder to all countries of their role in maintaining the robustness and integrity of the international anti-doping system.”

“New Zealand athletes have a well-earned reputation for playing hard but fair, and they and all other clean athletes deserve a level playing field. We need to ensure that all athletes participating in major competitions are subject to proper testing and oversight by compliant anti-doping authorities,” Mr Miskimmin says.
