Holiday pay remediation

Information for former employees

Sport NZ is checking past leave payments to make sure we met our obligations under the Holidays Act 2003. If we find we did not pay someone correctly, we will pay what they are owed.

If you worked for Sport NZ or High Performance Sport NZ between January 2018 and January 2024, you may be eligible for a payment.

What you need to know

The Holidays Act is complex, and some holiday pay was calculated incorrectly across the public sector.

We are reviewing payroll records and will contact former employees who may be affected.

If you are eligible, we will make a payment once we have confirmed your identity and payment details.

Questions?

Read our FAQ below or email our support team at Sport NZ or HPSNZ.

Frequently asked questions

These FAQs explain why we’re making payments, who can claim and what to do if you have questions.

  • Why are these payments needed?

The Holidays Act sets rules for how leave must be calculated. Some leave was not calculated correctly in the past, which may have led to people being underpaid. We’re fixing this by checking past payments and paying any amounts owed.

  • How will I know if I can claim?

If our records show you may be owed money, we’ll contact you using the last contact details we have for you. You can also email us at the details below if you need to update your details.

  • What information will I need to provide?

To confirm your identity and pay you, we may ask for:

    • Photo ID (for example, a passport or driver licence)
    • Your bank account details (when you last worked for Sport NZ)
    • Your IRD number
  • What if my name or bank account details have changed?

That’s okay. We’ll ask for documents to confirm your updated details before we make a payment.

  • I live overseas now. Can I still be paid?

Yes. We can make international payments. We’ll let you know if we need any extra information.

  • How long do I have to claim?

You have up to five years to claim. After that, any unclaimed money will be transferred to Inland Revenue.

  • Can I claim on behalf of someone else?

Yes, in some situations. You’ll need to show you’re authorised to act for them (for example, power of attorney or executor documents). We’ll also need your own photo ID.

  • Will you recover overpayments?

No. We will not recover historical overpayments.

  • What if I don’t agree with the amount?

Contact our support team and ask for a review. We can provide a breakdown of how your payment was worked out.

  • Is my personal information safe?

We’ll handle your information securely and only use it to complete the Holidays Act remediation process, in line with our privacy policy.
