Skatepark Planning and Design Guide
Skatepark Planning and Design Guide
Clear, practical guidance to help communities plan and design better skate spaces.
This Skatepark Planning and Design Guide was developed by CONVIC, with support from Wellington City Council, Sport NZ and other sector partners. It helps communities plan and provide a connected network of quality spaces for skate and wheeled activities across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Skateparks play an important role in supporting physical activity. They are welcoming, informal spaces where people can move, be creative and connect with others. They are especially important for tamariki and rangatahi.
As skateboarding and other wheeled sports continue to grow, communities need clear, practical guidance on how to plan and design these spaces well.
Why this guide is needed
In the past, skateparks have sometimes been developed without clear planning, input from users, links to nearby spaces or plans for ongoing care. This has led to some parks being poorly located or not meeting community needs.
This guide helps address these challenges by setting out good practice for skateparks that are safe, inclusive, well designed and well maintained.
