Maddi McLean

Kia ora, I am Maddi McLean and I am currently in my second year of the Sport NZ Graduate Programme. I studied a Bachelor of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Otago. I have always had a passion for sport and active recreation and have a strong background in hockey and coaching.

I was attracted by the numerous opportunities for learning and development on offer, including networking and gaining experience from a government, national and regional perspective. Highlights from 2018 include my involvement in the development of the Women and Girls in Sport and Active Recreation Strategy, organising the inaugural Graduate Forum, and gathering insights around the Voice of the Participant research.

I also spent time with Sport Wellington and Wellington City Council and valued working in different teams and engaging with the community. I developed my governance knowledge and experience through Good Governance in Sport Workshops and by interning on a Regional Sports Organisation Board. The opportunity to improve my Maori Cultural Capability has also been of significant value.

I am currently on a placement with Athletics NZ where I am developing a good understanding of how a National Sporting Organisation operates. A highlight has been the Street Athletics Festival where we showcased pole vault and shot put in central Christchurch. In July, I will return to my home region to begin my next experience with Sport Waikato.

I highly recommend the Sport NZ Graduate Programme because it is a fantastic way to experience how the New Zealand sport sector operates, as well as enabling you to be supported in your learning and development towards becoming a future leader.
