Andrew Cornaga received the Supreme Award at tonight’s Sir Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Awards held in Auckland.

The Photosport photographer was one of 13 category winners recognised at the annual Awards event and also received awards for best photography portfolio and best single photo. His photo of Daniel Vettori taking a one-handed catch at the cricket world cup was voted the best of the year.

Other notable award recipients were Herald on Sunday reporter Andrew Alderson, who took out the New Zealand Sports Journalists Association (NZSJA) Award for Best Single Sports Story, and Hawkes Bay Today reporter Anendra Singh, who received the NZSJA Award for Best Provincial/Community Journalist.

The Sport New Zealand Lifetime Contribution to Sport through Journalism Award went to senior New Zealand Herald Rugby Writer Wynne Gray, who is one of New Zealand’s most respected sports journalists and has covered the All Blacks for more than a quarter of a century.

This year’s two Sir John Wells Sport New Zealand Journalism Scholarships were awarded to Radio Live’s Nick Bewley and Radio Sport’s Charlie Bristow. Open to New Zealand sports journalists with up to five years of experience, the recipients will meet senior leaders and policy makers in New Zealand sports governance and gain a greater understanding of what happens ‘behind the scenes’ in New Zealand sport.

These were the 35th NZSJA Awards and bear the Sir Terry McLean name in recognition of the fact that ‘TP McLean’ was widely regarded as the doyen of New Zealand sports journalists.
