Active all year round

How seasons affect young people’s participation

This new report provides valuable insights into the seasonal patterns of young people’s participation in physical activity. Tamariki and rangatahi are active in many ways, from PE and competitions to play and extra exercise, and these patterns shift throughout the year.

Understanding these trends helps Sport NZ and the sector develop targeted strategies, programmes and facilities to maintain or increase participation year-round. It also supports our shared vision of Every Body Active.

Key findings

  • Fewer young people are active weekly during the warmer months, largely due to school holidays. However, they spend more time being active overall in spring and summer.
  • Participation in PE and coached activities peaks in the cooler months, while play activities rise in spring and summer.
  • Winter weather limits participation in structured activities more than in play.
  • Activity at schools and indoor facilities drops in summer, while home and outdoor locations like beaches and parks see increased use.

Applying these insights

This research can help organisations:

  • design seasonal programmes that respond to participation trends
  • collaborate across sports, organisations and communities to promote choice and opportunity
  • make better use of shared spaces and places
  • inform policy, planning and strategic initiatives.
