Finding out

Learning Intention

To understand what the different rates of participation (if any) are between boys and girls across Aotearoa New Zealand and to explore some things that are being done to improve participation.

Discussion

We are going to spend a bit of time looking at trends in participation for boys & girls. Do you think there will be a difference between how active girls are compared to boys? Why do you think this? In this learning experience we are going to look at participation differences between boys and girls in your region then look at one strategy that is underway to bridge the gap in participation. But first, let's look at a summary of the research about participation of girls and young women in play, active recreation and sport.

Step 1: Comparing participation between men/boys and women/girls

Let's look at how active men are compared to women. As a class, a group or just by yourself come up with a series of questions you want to explore using the Insights Tool. Remember that the intention of this learning experience is to understand how active girls are compared to boys in Aotearoa New Zealand. We've seen a summary of the research about participation of girls and young women in play, active recreation and sport. Lets see what we can find out about participation of boys and young men. If you feel like you still need some coaching in how to use the Insights Tool then the Insights Tool video might give you some more tips for this activity. Otherwise dive in and see what you can find out.

Step 2: What's involved in making a campaign?

Sport New Zealand has a campaign called "It's My Move" which has a focus on keeping young women active.

Have a look at the It's My Move webpage.

Once you have viewed the webpage answer the following questions as a class, a group or just by yourself. Why do you think the 'It's My Move' campaign has been developed? What differences do you think it will make? What lessons are there for us as we start to design our own activities?
