Growing girls’ participation in sport
Growing girls’ participation in sport
Lessons from the Taranaki Secondary Schools Sports Association (TSSSA)
This case study explores how the Taranaki Secondary Schools Sports Association (TSSSA) used data, student voice and partnerships with schools to better understand girls’ experiences in sport and create opportunities that reflected their needs and interests.
Over 3 years, this approach helped increase participation, particularly through social and entry-level activities alongside traditional sports competitions. It also provided valuable insights into what supports girls to get involved and stay involved in sport and physical activity.
At a glance
3,039 girls participated in TSSSA activities in 2025.
Girls made up 57% of all participants.
Girls’ participation exceeded boys’ participation across multiple terms during 2025.
Participation in social and foundation activities grew by 178% between 2023 and 2025.
Key learnings for the sector
The case study highlights several practical lessons for organisations looking to grow participation among girls and other groups experiencing barriers to sport and physical activity:
Make activities fun, social and welcoming to help young people get involved.
Give young people a say in shaping activities and opportunities.
Use data to understand who is taking part and who may need more support.
Work with schools and communities to find solutions that meet local needs.
Offer different ways to take part, not just traditional competitions.
Keep listening, learning and adapting based on feedback and participation trends.
