Hutt City Council: Te Ngaengae Pool and Fitness
Leading sustainability at a community aquatic centre
Te Ngaengae Pool and Fitness is Aotearoa New Zealand’s first Green 5 Star rated aquatic centre.
The centre opened in December 2024 and replaces the former Naenae Olympic Pool, which closed in 2019 because of earthquake risk. Hutt City Council led the rebuild and worked with the community on the design, with input from more than 2,000 residents and local groups.
The project reduced carbon emissions by 56% compared with the previous pool and recycled 80% of demolition material (more than 13,000 tonnes), keeping it out of landfill. The centre uses energy-efficient heat pumps, LED lighting and high performance glazing. It is also ready for future solar panels and rainwater harvesting.
The centre is designed to be accessible and inclusive, with features such as ramps and hoists. It also offers free swimming for tamariki under 10 in whānau with a community services card.
