North Harbour Hockey: Waste Zero 2027
Reducing waste and cutting emissions
North Harbour Hockey Association’s Waste Zero 2027 project is a long-term programme to reduce waste and use resources better.
The work supports the association’s Future Fit Roadmap (2022–2027). The wider goal is to cut emissions and work towards carbon zero by 2030. The association used consultation, audits and research to shape the plan. It is also embedding sustainability and Te Tiriti principles into decision-making and day-to-day operations.
Work includes waste audits, education, bioreactors made from repurposed materials, and trials of a centralised bin system to recover more materials. The club composts organic waste on site, which reduces what goes to landfill. The compost can also be sold, creating a small income stream for members.
Early results include less waste going to landfill and better management of organic material on site. The association is also planting natives to support local biodiversity. By sharing what it learns, North Harbour Hockey aims to help other sports organisations and local businesses take similar steps.
