Our Places - Waitaha and Te Tai Poutini 2026

A regional approach to Spaces and Places

Our Places – A Regional Approach to Spaces and Places Planning in Waitaha and Te Tai Poutini 2026 is the refreshed Canterbury Spaces and Places Plan. It provides a high‑level, region‑wide framework to guide how partners plan, invest in and advocate for quality spaces and places across Waitaha, Te Tai Poutini and the Chatham Islands.

Developed collaboratively by councils, Sport Canterbury, Sport New Zealand Ihi Aotearoa and sector partners, the Plan replaces the previous Canterbury Spaces and Places Plan and reflects changing participation preferences, population growth, affordability pressures and climate change impacts.

The Plan focuses on building a connected regional network of spaces and places that support play, active recreation and sport. It puts a strong emphasis on making better use of existing facilities first, while improving quality, accessibility, inclusion and long‑term sustainability.

A key feature of Our Places 2026 is its regional approach. By working together across boundaries, partners can reduce duplication, improve access and make more informed, evidence‑based decisions that deliver better outcomes for communities.

Our Places 2026 sets a shared direction for how we plan for the spaces and places people use to be active, connect and belong – now and into the future.
