Wellington Regional Spaces and Places Strategy 2025
Wellington Regional Spaces and Places Strategy 2025
The Wellington Regional Spaces and Places Strategy 2025 provides a high-level, one-region framework to guide planning, investment and decision making for sport and active recreation spaces and places across the Wellington region.
Led by Nuku Ora, the strategy has been developed in collaboration with councils, Sport NZ, regional sport and recreation organisations, education partners and community stakeholders. It replaces the 2019 Wellington Region Spaces and Places Strategy and reflects changing participation preferences, population growth, affordability pressures and the impacts of climate change.
The strategy focuses on creating a network of spaces and places that are accessible, inclusive, affordable and fit for purpose, while prioritising better use of existing facilities before investing in new ones.
A strong emphasis is placed on regional collaboration. By taking a coordinated, one-region approach, partners can reduce duplication, improve access and deliver better outcomes for communities across council boundaries. The strategy also recognises specific sub-regional challenges in areas such as the Wairarapa and Kāpiti Coast, where access and capacity pressures require targeted responses.
Supporting collaboration and good decisions
Alongside the strategy is a collaborative decision‑making framework, designed to support more consistent, evidence‑based decisions at a regional and sub‑regional level. This framework helps partners assess proposed initiatives against agreed planning principles, priorities and community need.
Nuku Ora will support and coordinate this process, working with councils, partners and stakeholders to enable collaboration and shared solutions.
