Information and support
In this section you will find information on COVID-19 alert levels, organisational resources and the detail of financial support available to the sector.

The play, active recreation and sport sector contributes $4.8b to New Zealand’s GDP each year and employs over 53,000 people. It is also a key contributor to the physical and mental wellbeing of New Zealanders.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major effect on the entire sector affecting those who participate and the organisations that provide play, active recreation and sport services.

Sport NZ provided initial relief funding as well as pandemic-management support and advice to the sector. Government has now committed $265m in investment to assist the sector in its short, medium and long term recovery. This will help the sector to achieve three outcomes:

  • Reset and rebuild
  • Strengthen and adapt
  • Different and better

See below to read the guidelines for play, active recreation and sport under each alert level and to find sector resources and funding information.
