Māori Play in Aotearoa

Ka tuku a Tākaro Māori i ngā tamariki ki te whakamātau i te harikoa me te ngahau, ka tukua hoki rātou kia whakamātauria ō rātou ahurea, ō rātou whakapapa, me te ao e noho ai rātou.

Tākaro Māori allows tamariki to experience joy and fun while giving them the opportunity to make sense of their culture, whakapapa, and the world they live in.

  • whakarite i ngā āheitanga mā ngā tamariki kia mōhio mai ai rātou ko wai rātou, nō hea rātou i a rātou e whakangahau ana

Looking at play through a te ao Māori lens shows us a distinct Aotearoa New Zealand approach to play which is strengths-based, culturally appropriate, and grounded in mātauranga Māori.

Sport NZ has a role to play in making sure tamariki have plenty of opportunities to play in ways that are relevant to them and their culture. The special relationship Māori have with the environment offers us a unique opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate tākaro Māori.

"Let us be taken by the spirit of play."

When it comes to tākaro Māori, the taiao (environment) plays a key role in the way we once played, the way we currently play and the way we want to play in the future.

The value of Tākaro Māori includes:

  • offering tamariki an opportunity to play as Māori
  • creating meaningful connections with others
  • enabling cultural knowledge and language transmission across generations and at all levels
  • creating opportunities for tamariki to understand who they are while having fun
  • celebrating our indigenous knowledge and unique view on Play in Aotearoa.

We are now seeing a resurgence of opportunities in ngā taonga tākaro, māra hupara and the development of new and emerging games developed by, for and with Māori.

As kaitiaki of the play, active recreation and sport system, we have a goal to restore, reclaim and revitalise traditional knowledge surrounding tākaro Māori and we are committed to ensuring the mana of tākaro Māori is upheld and maintained.
